DRUNK SMACKDOWN! REVIEW - 02/05/10

As promised, here is a by-memory drunk review of tonight's (awesome) episode of Smackdown!

LIKED
- Jericho's opening promo that segued into him going backstage and accosting people (including one fella who just sat down in shame after being touched by Jericho) until he could track down Teddy Long, who was actually Edge hiding behind a newspaper (lolnewspapers, use a laptop wtf)
- ALL of the Chamber Qualifying matches. I am such a gd sucker for a wrestling show that's based around wrestling. Call me old fashioned.
- The exclusive footage of the Batista/Cena confrontation after RAW. For some reason I find this as a cool idea - showing dark match stuff to move a feud forward. I like it. Plus, 'Tist's powerbomb to Cena onto the steel steps looks badass.
- EVERYTHING CM Punk, once again. The "match" with Batista was awesome, don't really know what the hell is going on there, but colour me intrigued, fellers!
- The closing angle with Punk, Jericho, Edge and Undertaker all in the ring. I didn't think so much talent could fit on my TV screen (this includes Undertaker's talent for showing up at the end of a show using his voodoo powers).

DID NOT LIKE
- Uh... the Divas match... I guess? Although I actually did like it. Beth Phoenix as the heel diva who just hands out beatdowns to everyone is pretty awesome. I think this just fits here because it might be the thing I was least entertained by. But even still, Michelle McCool and Layla are awesome as a team, and the diva segments always deliver on SD! for me. Consider this moved to the LIKED section!
- Oh, and Cryme Tyme's Word Up. I guess. Again. But even that was entertaining for how awkward and hilarious Jerry Lawler was. Plus they insinuated that they were going to a strip club. Ridiculous.

Great show, and once again, I'm shocked that this entire week (and more, if you count last week's fantastic Smackdown!) has been a winner because of WRESTLING being the focus of these WRESTLING shows.

And, by all accounts, this should keep up for the next week as well, with Punk/Gallows travelling to RAW to challenge DX for the Tag Straps (with Miz and Big Show involved), Bret Hart and Vince still being the driving emotional force on Monday, and a potential (at least that's what it appeared) blockbuster tag match on Smackdown! next week with Punk and Jericho teaming to take on the unlikely team of Taker and Edge (pure speculation, obvs.).

The Road to WrestleMania is and always will be the most consistently best time to watch WWE in the year. Even if it's littered with stupid crappy guest hosts.

I'm glad that the second W in WWE still means something in... uh... WWE.

DRUNK SMACKDOWN! REVIEW - 01/15/10

Or at least what I remember of it.

- Jericho vs. Morrison was super fun, but also a little short for my liking. Morrison crawling after McIntyre while he's in the Walls was fucking great, and him losing was cool too. Pushed the feud along nicely, because I legitimately hated Jericho winning, and McIntyre seems like a total wanker.

- Undertaker's promo was hilarious but also well-delivered. It was old school, but also pretty BS for him being the World Champion.

- The Steel Cage match was exciting, and I really didn't expect Rey to win. Batista is such a hilarious and hate-able heel that I was happy with the ending.

- That being said, Mysterio's pre-match promo was so fucking funny, and clearly a script:"Nightmares are dreams. And there are also good dreams. Dreams are cool. My dream is to win the title. Dreams are pretty. Peace out, Raymond Stereo."

- Kane/Ziggler was good, and has probably been one of the best straight-up wrestling feuds in WWE in a little while. Ziggler losing was unfortunate, but he also looked great in the match against Kane, who is somehow still over after playing the same character for three hundred years.

- CM Punk is a god. Not just as a character now, but simply in real life. Because he is getting so much heat for how absolutely untouchable he is on the mic that he's turning FANS heel. Did anyone else hear that "TREVOR SUCKS" chant? Unreal.

- I hope Punk and Gallows take the belts from DX and ignite a DX feud that turns into my Hitman vs. Vince storyline. I was hoping originally that DX would drop to the Hart Dynasty, but I'm totally cool with the belts going to Punk and Gallows. Either way, Jeri-Show built the belts up for so long that DX winning them felt like a big deal, so therefore under wrestling booking rules, whoever beats DX should be considered a big deal, so Gallows/Punk of the Hart Dynasty should be pleased when (please when, not if) they win the straps.

- The Divas match was great, and I really think that "Team Lay-Cool" is one of the best heel teams going right now, men included. So funny, and they come off as badass at the same time.

Great show all-round. Smackdown! seems to be on the rebound as of late (ignoring last week's abomination of an ending).

DRUNK SMACKDOWN! REVIEW - 12/4/09

I watched SD! last night in a big group while drinking, before heading out to see a band. Here's what I remember:

- Arrived during Punk/R-Truth. It looked like a good match, and I liked Luke Gallows' two-handed chokeslam into missionary position move.

- Don't remember much about Kane/Mike Knox, which is probably a blessing in disguise.

- Jericho was hilarious in his interview. So good. The promo Jerishow did to open RAW already sold me on the feud, but this interview sold me on the match itself. And then Big Show closed the promo by biting Chris Hero's style.

- Triple Threat Divas match was super solid.

- I like that Matt Hardy plays video games while the show is going on. "Go get 'em homie! I'll just be here waiting out my contract."

- McIntyre was good. Really liked the ring frame trick. I didn't see it coming and shouted out when it happened, partly because of the drinking, partly because of how surprising it was, but also the drinking.

- John Morrison's slow-mo fireworks were real purty.

- Not sure what's going on with Eric Escobar. Maybe it's the idea that he could get over more for opposing Vickie week after week instead of getting heat for being by her side.

- Punk and Luke Gallows are awesome together, but I have to admit that I still don't understand why Gallows is dressed like he can't decide if he's in the army or riding a motorcycle. Anyway, I'm so into the straight-edge army though. Before, Punk's promos were awesome, but he would only go after the crowd. Now he has an example he can point to in the ring. Sweet.

- Shad looked like a jobber. He debuts a new haircut, gets tagged in for the first time and is instantly punched in the face and pinned. Ouch.

- Missed the Batista/Taker segment, but it doesn't seem like we missed much. Just a chair beatdown to build to the unprecedented CHAIRS MATCH. Not a fan of the themed PPVs. I'll probably write something about that in the near future, even though it's been talked about to death on the internet. But it's like some sort of epidemic. The widespread switch from event to themed event happened so fast. Ah crap. I can feel a rant coming on. REPRESS THE ANGER!
