THEMED RAWS: DENIM

First, it was themed PPVs. Now, it's themed RAWs.

Some of you may just want to see Old School RAW over and over again, but not me - oh no. I want more from my themed RAW shows. I want an all denim RAW. No dad, I'm not gay.

We all know that two of the biggest stars in the history of wrestling were big on the denim, those of course being Steve Austin and John Cena (who's affinity for denim is unparalleled seeing as he only has one outfit for everything he does). But this themed RAW would see the return of all your favourite denim-clad Superstars. And it would have to be three hours to fit in all of the leather fanny packs that accompany the denim.

This post was supposed to culminate in a picture of the British Bulldog in jeans, jean shirt and leather fanny pack, but no picture seems to exist. I think my memory of this video tricked me into thinking there was a photo somewhere, but there isn't, and that's... BIZARRE!

WWE TLC REVIEW: THE SECOND BEST WRESTLING PPV THIS WEEKEND!

I watched two wrestling pay-per-views this weekend. One I watched with a group of friends, having some beers and a shouty good time. The other I watched stone cold sober, by myself, whilst cramming a Pizza Hut pizza into my face. Let's see if it's true that your surroundings can affect your mood!

WWE TLC: TABLES, LADDERS & CHAIRS
LIKE: SHEAMUS/MORRISON
DISLIKE: $45 FILLER
Photo - WWE.com

Fifty-five if you got the HD feed, which I did not. I wish you could allocate portions of your $55 to parts of the PPV, so the next time they do a PPV, they know what paying customers are paying to see. So I'd give like thirty-five bucks to Sheamus and John Morrison, ten bucks to Alberto Del Rio's plunge to the outside, five to Natalya's improv-splash, five to John Cena's obliteration of Wade Barrett, and I'd ask Kane for whatever he's got in his pockets.

LIKED
- Sheamus vs. John Morrison. This was without question the highlight of the entire show. It was great for every reason you could think of. It was an awesome match, the ladder didn't feel like it was thrown in there and they had to use it (like it can feel in some matches), the selling was perfect, there were big spots, plenty of suspense, and the match made the WWE Title seem even more important based on how long and brutal they went at it. The best part is that I'm not a big Sheamus fan (I don't "laich" him) and John Morrison might be the definition of hit and miss to me. This match had me on the edge of my seat with two guys I normally don't care about. That's the sign of a good match right there.
- Parts of the World Title TLC match. By then the gimmick had worn out it's welcome (two ladder matches and several table breaks earlier in the night), but they still managed to get some good stuff in. It's a shame that it was so obvious that this match was there for the big stunt spots, while Morrison and Sheamus had more of a focus and purpose and stuff.
- Alberto Del Rio's plunge from the top of the ladder to the outside through a table. He looked he hit the ground at warp speed.
- Natalya's obviously improvised splash through Lay-Cool, which made the match/finish WAY BETTER. So awesome. And not to mention Natalya's "YOU GUYYYYYS. YOU GUYYYYYS." after the match.
- Beth Phoenix landing on her head like twice in that match.
- Kofi Kingston's ability to make up new moves with ladders. Not every match has to be about coming up with new shit to do with the ladder, we mostly just want a good match. But when you have an entire PPV devoted to the TLC gimmick (not to mention an annual MITB match AND PPV), someone's going to have to do something different. It seems like Kofi will never run out of parts of the ladder to jump through/attach to himself.
- The seeds being planted for Cena/Punk. At first, I wasn't sure if Cena was the one Punk was talking about in his Slammy acceptance speech. But now it's pretty clear - why else would they have Punk call that match if not to have some more sound bites of CM Punk not approving of John Cena. When this match happens at WrestleMania, it's going to be fucking awesome.
- The double finish to Miz/Orton. Mike Chioda calling the bell after seeing Orton lying in some table shards was pretty ridiculous, even if it did get people to boo Miz out of the friggin' country. But then having Miz STILL outsmart Orton after the restart was awesome, and should set the tone for his reign. I'm excited to see more matches where the Miz has to scramble and figure out what he has to do to hold onto the belt he loves so much.

DISLIKED
- Themed PPVs. It's not like I see numbers on these things or whatever, so I can only speak about their success in terms of watching it as a fan. It sucks knowing that Sheamus/Morrison could've stood out THAT MUCH MORE if this was just a regular PPV with stipulations added naturally, instead of being forced on matches like Miz/Orton and Barrett/Cena. By the end of it, I just didn't care anymore. It took John Cena to line up eight folding chairs and hurl Wade Barrett through them (and then dump a row of chairs onto him (kinda)) to get my attention, which sucks, because I was ready for this match to be exciting.
- John Cena covering Wade Barrett before dropping chairs on him. WTF. Don't do that spot if you can't just DO IT, instead of being like "hold on let me cover you up because this'll hurt and wrestling's fake!" It sure looked cool (if you didn't see the wooden shield). Maybe they can edit out the weird wooden Wade Barrett-protector out for the DVD!
- Kane's Christmas promo. Yeah. He cut a promo on Christmas. The Kane character is getting more goofy by the second. With Kane cutting a promo on Christmas, he's forcing me to think of a Little Red Machine looking out at the kids playing on Christmas all sad while he just sits in his home with Paul Bearer in a Christmas sweater and Kane probably in the same stupid pants he's been wearing forever now.
- The tag match for no reason. And the Big Show Santa Claus promo for no reason. When you buy a PPV on your own (I have friends, I swear!) and you know you're shouldering the entire cost of this thing, it stings that much more when the Big Show comes out for ten minutes handing out copies of his STUPID FUCKING STRAIGHT TO DVD FAILURE MOVIE. I literally got angrier as that sentence went on. And the tag match was just chucked on there, because yeah, you've gotta break up the endless gimmick matches THAT YOU FORCED ON YOURSELVES. WOW I gotta keep my rage in check. But seriously. If we're paying any kind of money for something, I'd appreciate it if we got some surprises on the card that were at least worth getting. Like, for example, the Daniel Bryan/Ted DiBiase dark match that went on before the PPV. Anyway. Frig.
- Big Show calling Cody Rhodes unfunny. That statement is so backwards that I want to punch a hole through my own face and sell it with a back bump.
- The weird running gag with Nexus and Cena backstage. "haaaay!"
- Most of Miz/Orton. I almost forgot it happened. Maybe it's because...
- It was a Tables match. All that the announcers talked about during the tables match was how dumb tables matches are. At least with Ladder matches, there's a logical goal. Climb the ladder and be the first to retrieve (or "gain custody" if you're Tony Chimel) the belt/contract/wedding ring, whatever. With a tables match, you're just waiting for the stunt. And the wrestlers know how dumb it is - you could just fall through a table and all of a sudden you're not the best wrestler in the world anymore. The idea that Miz could drag Orton onto some table shards, point the referee in the right direction and he wins, is dumb. I'm glad they overturned it for the sake of Mike Chioda's reputation (yeah I am concerned about a referee's reputation in a fake sport). With the TLC PPV, all of the other matches seem to have a point (although the Chairs match doesn't really make total sense either), and aren't constantly being argued by announcers and wrestlers how stupid they are. Tables matches should've been left behind with the Attitude Era. I wish I could articulate my point better. But I can't because my brain has melted from watching naked men pretend to fight each other all day every day.

The last thing I will say is this. I expected this PPV to completely bomb with me considering I watched Final Battle the night before. But thanks to John Morrison and Sheamus, this review isn't a total top-to-bottom trashing of TLC. But it still fell short of what ROH did on Saturday, because c'mon guys, that shit was crazy.

WHOA: WWE SUMMER PPV-NAME OVERHAUL

I always knew that the Themed PPVs situation was an epidemic... but good lord the infection is spreading quickly!

Breaking news courtesy of NoDQ.com's Twitter.

April 25th - Extreme Rules (So long Backlash)
May 23rd - Wild Card
June 20th - Fatal Fourway
July 18th - MONEY IN THE BANK

Welp, the rebranding continues. I think we can all guess what some of these names mean - and one change could mean no MITB at 'Mania this year.

With Survivor Series still to be replaced, we're going to have an almost brand new calendar year for WWE Events. Cah-razy.

SURVIVOR SERIES DOESN'T SURVIVE :(

I really can't believe that Survivor Series is getting eliminated here. It just doesn't feel right. The other PPV numbers were daunting, totally beating out SS, but I expected Survivor Series to rally up next year, come back, and take out those gimmick events one by one to be the sole survivor! Isn't that how it usually goes?!

In all seriousness, this blows. Survivor Series has always been one of my favourites events, and to see it get replaced will feel pretty stupid to me.

The worst part is that it seems like Vince McMahon is blaming it's failure on not being a gimmick PPV, and being outdated:

"We think that Survivor Series is obsolete, as far as that title is concerned. It was something that worked many, many years ago, in terms of a creative standpoint, various teams competing. That really is not advantageous as the consumer now looks as what actually they are buying. And it's such a broad ... Survivor Series yes, many years ago, was one of the original four pay-per-views, but it's outlasted its usage and it is one of the things in terms of re-branding, this year and going forward, that will be re-branded. No longer will we have that title, Survivor Series."

HUH.

Yep. When no one bought Survivor Series a few months ago, it's because people were like "Man Survivor Series is SOOOOOO 1980whatever!" That's it.

Not because the card was a pile of crap. Or because the build to the show itself was completely lame.

So now we get a new gimmick PPV. This is going to get old fast. Every feud is going to take the same path from here on out. Any feud that can last more than three months, that is.

Every year: "Remember that great wrestler A/wrestler B feud? First they had their submission match, then they had their Hell In A Cell match, then they had their TLC Match, and now they're having their BLHAGVBDU match!"

No feud has ever taken that insane route, and now THREE A YEAR WILL?!

It's just so weird. Instead of having these feuds that end up being defined by their big blowoff match (Shawn/Jericho ladder, Shawn/Razor ladder, Taker/Mankind HIAC, Edge/Anybody TLC), you have EVERYONE just running the same gauntlet of gimmick matches.

Would the Taker/Shawn HIAC been as special as it was had Shamrock and Rock, and the Headbangers and the Godwinns also had Cell matches that night? And there were three more the year before and the year after? ALL of which had NOTHING to do with the feud? I don't think so.

But what I think really doesn't matter. WWE drew bigger numbers on their new themed-PPVs this past year than they did on their "normal" counterparts the year before.

So I guess it's full steam ahead! Bring on the Triple Cage PPV! The War Games! The Team-Warfare-Elimination-Style-Match PPV! Oh wait! THAT'S SURVIVOR SERIES

Bring it all on. I'll still watch, which is the sad part. But the truth is, it won't last forever. Kinda like when comics have to reboot when things get a little too crazy and confusing in their universe, so will the WWE.

They already did it with their wrestling-style. We went from the Attitude-Era and the post-Attitude-Era (Ruthless Agression Era?) with hard hitting, more athletic (Angle, Eddie, Benoit, Lesnar) matches, to the now PG-in-HD Era that has slowed things down a ton, and is more about the jiggly-camera shots and the matches that are more movie scenes where the actors/superstars have to hit their mark.

I anticipate the same thing will happen with PPVs somewhere down the line. Eventually shit will get so bananas that they'll have to come back down to earth and make gimmick matches mean something again.

Or Vince McMahon will go completely senile and we'll see some truly fucked up shit.

If that's the case, count me in. Just me though. Not my money.

I'll always remember these specific Survivor Series moments:

1. (duh) The Montreal Screwjob. I remember not really fully understanding it when I heard about it happening at 11 years old. I knew it was something that hadn't really happened before. I knew that I loved Bret Hart and I hated stupid Shawn Michaels, and now I hated Vince McMahon.

2. The beginning of the Corporate Champion, The Rock, Survivor Series 1998. Now 12 years old, I loved The Rock - and I even grew to love him with the Corporation.

3. Trying to watch Survivor Series 1997 on scramble at my Grandma's house. When the warning of rebroadcasting/duplicating the event came up, I got scared that I was going to get in trouble. It soon scrambled after that and I settled down. What a baby. I think I even asked my mom if I would get arrested for watching it, even with the feed scrambled.

4. The Winner Take All Match when Vince threw his coat down in triumph. I knew it was all fake, but being such a WWE mark I was still in awe that the wars were officially over.

5. Chris Jericho vs. John Cena for the World Title. I was so invested in this match because I wanted Jericho to win so badly. It ended up being a pretty great match, even though he lost.

RIP
SURVIVOR SERIES

THEMED PPVS: AN EPIDEMIC

Themed WWE pay-per-view events in 2007/08: 4 out of 29

Themed WWE pay-per-view events in 2009/10: 14 out of 27

H1N1 eat your heart out.

We need to seriously take a step back and address this situation. Themed PPVs have taken over the wrestling world, and we as a people need to stop them!

The only non-major events without a theme are Backlash, The Bash and one event that's TBA for the summer. I totally assume that eventually every PPV will have a theme. Problem is, I don't know what themes could even be left to theme an event with.

I'm not sure who we have to thank (read: blame) for the themed events. Lockdown first showed up in 2005... but Taboo Tuesday made it's first appearance in 2004, but that's not quite the same idea I suppose, or at least not as ridiculous.

Then again, Survivor Series has been going since forever, and I'd definitely count it as a themed event.

One way or another, something spawned a whole new gaggle of themed events. Some were accumulated over time, but a good handful have popped up in the last couple years.

Bragging Rights - RAW vs. Smackdown! Matches
Breaking Point - Submission Matches
Elimination Chamber - Elimination Chamber Matches
Extreme Rules - EXTREME Matches
Hell in a Cell - Hell in a Cell Matches
Night of Champions - Championship Matches
Survivor Series - Elimination Matches
TLC: Tables, Ladders and Chairs - Tables and/or Ladders and/or Chairs Matches

Here's what I propose for the future:

BACKLASH BECOMES...
REMATCHLASH

It's already a given that the card usually features rematches from WrestleMania, so why not do the same thing we did with No Way Out? Rename it to say exactly what will happen on the show!

THE BASH BECOMES...
WWE ON A POLE

The Bash would transform completely to feature three main event matches with things on a pole! It could be ANYTHING. Cena vs. Orton - WWE Title on a pole. Undertaker vs. Batista - Casket on a Pole. DX vs. Legacy POLE ON A POLE.

SUMMERSLAM BECOMES...
VAMPIRESLAM

SummerSlam has always been the WrestleMania of the summer - but lately the WWE has been looking for more LA connections. Let's just get it out in the open already, hitch our wagon to Twilight's star and bring the tween-age (just coined that term) celebs with us!

ROYAL RUMBLE BECOMES...
ROYAL RUMBLES

That's right - THREE ROYAL RUMBLES! Hey, it's a spectacular match, so three is better than one ALWAYS, right?! And all the winners go on to...

WRESTLEMANIA BECOMES...
SEASON FINALE MANIA

Our fans are complete retards and need to know that WrestleMania means the end to all feuds. There would be three main events all dubbed "Season Finales" and John Cena could hype it as usual by saying stuff like "our feud ends at Season Finale Mania!" and "after Season Finale Mania, we will start hating different people!" Because...

THE TBA EVENT IS...
WRESTLING IS FAKE, GUYS!

And that's what these events are telling us. Gimmick matches were always added because the story took the wrestlers to them, not because the events was named after them and they had to do it. This foolproof idea has been nearly ruined by themed events, because the event is now about the match type and not the story.

I hope they can at least start to deliver wild and crazy events (I was a big fan of the Orton/Cena Iron Man match, which was full of super unrealistic drama) so I can watch and not shake my head in shame as a fan of pro wrestling.

It's time for a vaccine for this PPV Theme Epidemic. For me, it's just a little more sports in my sports entertainment.

How about you?
